Today’s guest post comes from a fellow digital nomad , Cassie of Secure Thoughts where she and other writers write about Internet Security.
Cassie shares some tips on how to stay safe online and with your technology while traveling. Enjoy!

Digital nomad was not a career when I went to college. Nobody I knew used a laptop to work while traveling or ran from outside a cubicle. My friends and I dreamed about how to maximize our annual vacation, but that was all we could do.
When I quit my corporate job only a year after graduating from college, I did so with some trepidation and a lot hope that I would be able to make travel writing a career. Two years later, I am still going strong.
It’s important to know how to start a business as a digital nomad. These are the things I wish I knew when I started my business. From learning about cyber security to being ready for poor internet connections, I’m sharing them with everyone.
These gadgets and tips will help you keep your belongings and tech safe while you explore the world.
Theft-Proof Your Belongings
Traveling as a livelihood means you will use any means to keep your possessions safe. From smart luggage with an internal tracker to wallets that have RFID protection, it is important to make sure your things are in your control. Traveling with only a carry-on is my first tip. If possible, invest in a version with an app and remote lock to ensure your belongings are safe.

CYBER SECURITY REINFORCEMENT
Downloading cyber security software, such as Virtual Private Networks (VPN), is my best tip for using the internet abroad. A VPN is designed to provide a secure connection, no matter from where you connect. It will also keep hackers out and give you a safe place to work.
You should also prevent your computer from connecting automatically to networks while you are abroad. Before you click or connect, stop and think. Disable wireless or Bluetooth networks that automatically seek available networks. Do not perform sensitive activities such as online shopping, paying bills or using public networks.
DO NOT SKIMP on INSURANCE
You may need to purchase travel coverage if you are traveling with a Visa. Consider it even if you’re not required to.
SafetyWing Nomad insurance covers almost every country in the world.
Insurance is a must-have when you travel. It can help you with lost luggage or ensure you are airlifted from the country if you have an emergency.
A tip to add: insure your technology by purchasing additional technology insurance and bringing backup drives. You never know what can happen when you travel, so it is always best to be prepared.
Prepare your tech
It’s always a good idea to update your mobile applications, back up your data, and lock everything before you leave. Travel devices like iPhones and laptops are the same as your work or home computer when you’re away. You should treat them accordingly. Install a good cloud service. Lock your device when you are not in front of it. Change your PINs and passwords to something strong.

Editor’s Note from Micki: we recently switched to Amazon Drive, and so far are loving it.
These travel tips will help you keep your business running smoothly while on the road, whether you are writing, building code, or taking an extended trip and updating your blog. Do not skimp on safety and security. The best defense is a good offense.
