Decoding Sakuraco: Evaluating the Value-for-Money of the Japanese Sweets & Snack Box – Our Review

Do you miss the tastes of other countries? This hands-on Sakuraco review tests the popular Japan snack box subscription service. Our family of four will see if this helps to satisfy both their hunger and travel tastes.

It can be difficult to find authentic Japanese sweets and snacks outside of Japan, particularly in Canada. It’s really a shame because food can give us an insight into a culture, and snacking is a fun and easy treat.

Here’s our review of the Sakuraco Japanese Subscription Box.

OUR SAKURACO BOX REVIEW

The Sakuraco Box arrived securely packaged in bubble wrap. The contents were all in excellent condition.

The box was a beautiful earthy tone with gold accents. Elegant packaging matches the high-end snacks that are inside.

WHAT’S INSIDE THE SUKURACO BOX?

Sakuraco boxes are filled with Japanese sweets, teas and snacks that have been sourced locally. Each box contains 20 seasonal snacks and often treats from various Japanese prefectures.

The box contains traditional Japanese teas like matcha, hojicha and other seasonal teas as well as Japanese household goods such as chopsticks, furoshiki, ceramics etc. There are also traditional Japanese sweets and cakes like manju, mochi and yokan. You’ll also find seasonal sweets like sakura and momiji as well as senbei, konpeito, and local confectioners.

The guide is beautifully detailed and comes in each box. Each snack is described in English along with information on its origin, and sometimes even the region from which it originated. Each box also includes a complete list of allergens for every item.

Review of the Hokkaido Winter Festival December box

We were delighted to find that the Sakuraco guide notes whether each of their treats is vegetarian.

Although most of the items in our box are vegetarian, there was a small number that were not to our taste. This is to be expected with an assortment. These boxes work well for groups or families. Sharing an experience with others, whether it’s a good one or a bad one, can be incredibly bonding.

There were a number of things that each one of us found particularly interesting.

OUR FAVORITE SAKURACO TREATS

The Hokkaido Milk Karinto was my daughter’s favourite snack. The Hokkaido Milk Karinto is a wheat batter lightly fried and covered with sugar.

Charles was a big fan of the Yubari chocolate melon sandwich cookie. Yubari Melon is used, a Hokkaido classic flavor. White chocolate, and crisp butter cookies are also included.

The banana baumkuchen was a big hit with our son. The banana flavor is light and sweet, with thin layers of egg batter. The cookies are meant to go with coffee or tea, but we just ate them.

The walnut and Kobukoro Mochi were my two favorites.

Seaweed is not my favorite, but the Kobukoro Mochi was delicious. It’s flavored with umami Hokkaido Kobu seaweed. Delicious!

This walnut mochi is made from red sweet beans and mochi, along with walnut chunks. It was described as having a slight soy flavor, but I didn’t detect it. The rice paper is wrapped with a thin, edible layer.

Don’t assume that the white outer cardboard is edible rice paper. (Hint: It’s not!)

It is the translucent, thin wrapping that surrounds the walnut sticky mochi. The rice paper dissolves in the mouth.

HOW MUCH DOES SAKURACO COST?

Sakuraco costs $37.50 per month.

This cost falls to $33.50 per month for three-month subscriptions, and to only $35.50 with a six-month subscription.

For a 12-month subscription, the most affordable price is 32.50 dollars per month. When you subscribe, the total amount is charged.
